Mood and tone are very important in literature. Mood and tone set the scene for how a story, poem, novel etc.. will go. Without having mood and tone many genres would fall flat. The plot would be flat and out of place. For example, if given a scary movie, giving it a happy tone and mood would be extremely odd, but if given a more suspicious and lurking tone, it would instantly become scary. In contrast, in making a comedy, the tone and mood would be very light and happy.
Therefore, mood and tone allows readers to get some sort of feel of how the piece of literature is going to go.

This is extremely important when portraying plots. This example below is a good way to see mood and tone. This example is really vital to things like movies. If edited, one can change a comedy to a horror film, or vice versa. Editors can change the scene by changing music, sound effects, and voice overs. In this clip from the child film Frozen, is edited with scary music, and sound effects to simply change it from fantasy like and uppity, to scary, and lurking.
